Individual Therapy:
DBT Associates of South Florida expect DBT clients to meet with their therapist between one to three times weekly for 50-minute sessions. Each client works on an individualized plan to reduce the behaviors that interfere with functioning effectively and to increase use of skillful behaviors. To further reinforce the skills taught in the skills groups, telephone coaching with a trained DBT therapist is encouraged between group sessions.
Skills Training Group:
DBT skills groups generally consist of 4-8 group members and meet once a week for 90 minutes. The groups teach members skills based on the four modules of DBT (Core Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation, and Distress Tolerance). DBT Skills Training Group focuses on helping patients acquire the coping skills they will need to solve their own problems and achieve their desired goals. Homework assignments are reviewed and skills that have been practiced during the previous week are discussed and reinforced. Individuals participating in a DBT skills group are asked to be in concurrent individual psychotherapy, preferably with an intensively trained DBT therapist.
Phone Coaching:
Clients are asked to call their individual therapists for skills coaching prior to hurting themselves. The therapist then walks them through alternatives to self-harm or suicidal behaviors.
Consultation Team:
DBT Associates of South Florida are all part of a consultation team that meet weekly. As part of treatment, each individual therapist must participate in a consultation team.
